Things We'll Miss

In light of our coming departure from Ghana, Megan and I have decided to share a few of the things we'll miss most when we get back in the States.

- Having an audience of children while we bath (and occasionally shooing away a few toddlers)
- Picking 4-5 oranges straight from the tree and eating them all within 20 minutes
- Chasing goats out of our kitchen
- Thought-provoking, life-changing conversations over egg sandwiches and Milo
- Picking bugs out of our hot water
- Comparing Kwashie hickies with other volunteers
- Being gross by Ghanaian standards (bathing every 3 days as opposed to twice a day)
- Telling our names to the same 35 children on the street every day
- Being in a land of passionate footballers during the World Cup
- Rice...just kidding
- Groundnut cake...seriously
- Being disappointed every time we bath by the realization that what we thought were tan lines on our feet were actually dirt
- Listening to Rasta/Christian radio every day
- Waiting hours in the internet cafe in hopes that the lights will soon come back on (as we just did)

Hope all is well. Stay tuned for our final post of all time next Monday. (ahhhh!!!) Also, be sure to support the Ghana Black Stars this Friday, July 2nd, as they play Uruguay. Victory!

  1. Chelsea, you can do nearly all of that when you get home. You can hire kids to watch you bathe. You can pick some oranges from a tree at home and eat them all within 20 minutes. You can get some goats and chase them out of your kitchen. You can have thought provoking conversations over egg sandwiches, just use skype. You can attract bugs to your water and pick them out. You can still get hickies, but I guess it won't be the same as Kwashie. You can bathe every 3 days. The 35 children on the street will be hard, but I'm sure you can hire 35 kids from Adamsville. A lot of people around you will still be passionate about football (yes I mean international, though I'm sure you are getting excited about American football as well). You can bake groundnut cake. You can play in the dirt, put SPF 5 billion sunscreen on, and then you can have the same experience. You already listen to Christian radio every day. You can build an internet cafe, and only pay the electric bill on occasion, causing the lights to go out but have the chance to come back on.

What you'll miss most is none of those things, Chelsea, but the people you've met and being able to make an impact on those who are less fortunate than you. (Of course, you have a lot of friends back home who you miss and can make an impact on people back home, but you still will miss your Ghanaian friends a great deal I suspect). Of course, deep down, I'm sure you are already aware of this.

Anyway, Ghana is going to beat Uruguay. My favorite picture of all the ones you've posted is the one with all of the kids with black stars on their face, from the last post. Also, NBA free agency started at midnight ET in the USA today (last night). Where is Lebron going?

  2. Less than a week and not a moment too soon. I bet it will be strange getting accustomed to American life again. Soon you'll realize nothing has changed - except for the lives you've touched, which are many. Love you and see you very soon !!! Mom.

  4. You girls will never be the same. An experience like this will change your life forever. Have a safe trip back. I am wondering what the first thing will be that you will eat when you get home. Lauren has already been asking for strawberry pie. Love you both and can't wait to see you! Kim
