and more poems

CHICKENS:

From dawn until dusk,
I hear the roosters crow;
a chicken is nearby
everywhere I go.

They take the bread right from my hand;
they poop, they peck, they squawk.
I like to kick them with my foot
and give them quite a shock.

Chickens are so ugly,
I never really knew
how I only really like them
when they're in my stew.

OBRONI:

When I was born
my parents gave me a name;
little did I know
in Ghana it is not the same.

"White man!" "Empress!"
--these both refer to me.
But the most common shout is
"Obroni!" "Obroni!"

"Obroni give me money."
"Obroni buy this tea."
"Obroni how is life?"
"Obroni marry me."

It truly is my new name,
I respond to every call.
I get a lot of attention,
I'm a rare sight after all.

What will I do
when I'm home with a pen
and I go to sign my name
... wait, what is it again?

  1. Hello again...you finally made me break down and try to come up with a poem, although i don't recall any of the format, etc of haiku...it's just a poem....i think all of your followers should respond with a poem sooner or later. anyway, i hope you enjoy...i love you and i think you are both amazing....mom.

    adwoa and akua
they are called obroni as well
    on a mission to ghana
    God's Word is their tale

    maidens from america's shores
    learning another way
    dancing and praising
    what will you learn today?

you are blessings to the children
your loving kindness imparted to all
they'll always remember adwoa and akua
    who faithfully answered God's call.

  4. That's a lot of pressure to write a poem! I'm not a poet, but I tried... And I wrote a rap/song instead. It's not very good. But it should be rapped in first person by Chelsea, except for the chorus, which would be done by background vocalists. The song samples "Daniel" by Elton John, and the chorus directly quotes from that song, with a few slight lyrical changes. Anyway, here it is:

I was playing golf one afternoon
I was playin’ so well, we were done too soon
I used a lot of irons, read poems by Lord Byron; I aint a Tiger, I’m a lion
I can hit the ball farther with my putter than you can with a driver
I make more money than Mrs. Miniver
Later that night, I got into a fight because someone was like
    “Yo, Chelsea, you’re very unChristian….sike!”
Didn’t hear him say “sike,” and that’s why we had a fight
Until I won, I finally showed him the light
Of Christianity, therefore I hopped on my bike
And I biked across the Atlantic Ocean to Ghana that night

    Chorus:
Deaniel, my brother, you are older than me.
Do you still feel the pains from the fight you had that night?
You’re eyes have died, but you see more than I
Deaniel, you’re the greatest… orphanage volunteer in Ghana’s history

When I got into Ghana, I stepped into a sauna
After all, it’s cold biking across the Atlantic Ocean
And I hadn’t eaten, I was way too thin, I just had to eat before I could begin
But for some reason, I didn’t; I hardly ever eat, all I want to do is rap to the beat
Later that day, (yes the same day that this rap began, it just happened to be an everlasting day) which was in the month of May
I met my friend from Oral Roberts and heard her say:
“Chelsea, you’re the greatest rapper in the world, but before you record, you need to take this sword, and destroy every obstacle in our way.”
So I did, and we kidnapped a kid, not the goat kind, like an actual kid
And he said: “Obronis, if you let me go, I’ll take you where you want, quid pro quo”
So, we said “fine” and we followed some signs
To an orphanage, the kid was quite kind,
there we volunteered as friends and with our peers
    This day was mine
The greatest day since 0-9-2-8, 1989

    Chorus

At the orphanage, we clearly were the best
They made all of our food with lemon zest
    This is not in jest
We also found a huge treasure chest
    But I digress…
Anyway, we dominated the volunteering night and day
They even let us pick up imports from the bay
All the kids love us, they really like to hug us
And if asked why, it really is no mystery
I’m the greatest Christian rapper in history

    Chorus (2X)

    - Brennan

  5. Megan and Chelsea, I smile a big one as God is blessing the children, you, the other workers, and the people around. I love your stories. Stories bring people together, you and the listener have now experienced it through the story. The Bible is full of this. Keep telling your stories, they mean alot to me. They are inspiring, sad, smileful, and beautiful. This is a really good story.
