Day Twenty-Four

Day 24:

This post was going to start out with a description of bringing Zenabu and Ernestina to the internet with us this morning, but the power went out an they aren't with us this time around, so instead I'll just include the picture:

We've been trying to carry the kids on our backs pretty often, both to bond with them and to balance out the pounds of rice and palm oil we eat each day. It's a lot of fun, but we've found that there are dozens of women who are very excited to show us how to carry a child who's fallen asleep. Unfortunately, there are about as many methods as women, so we'll probably keep getting that help for a while. It's sweet, though, and we're getting better (especially me, since Megan already had a summer of practice). We even got our first compliment today from someone outside the orphanage ("Obroni! You carry them well!"). That's an exciting thing to hear, haha.

In other news, which a few of you already know, Megan and I decided last week to move down into the orphanage house to spend as much time as possible with the kids. Wee! Monday was our first night there, and we eat breakfast and lunch with them, as well as just helping out with random chores throughout the day. We still eat dinner at the volunteer house, though, because we couldn't fully give up Nancy's cooking. Megan shares her bed in the house with the beautiful Rahael (age 7), and I'm in the boys' room with Ezekiel (also age 7).

We were sort of afraid it would be disruptive for the kids to have us down there, but they hardly notice. :) Since Monday, we've had the pleasure of learning how to draw water from the well and carry the buckets on our heads, which, like tying babies, takes a little practice. I spent most of that first day soaking wet down the front of my outfit. It's nice that it doesn't really matter here. We're also finding a lot of ways/places to get quiet time, so that's been another good part of the move.
All in all, it's been a good week, still learning so much about living here and trying to be as helpful as possible. The weekend shouldn't be too eventful as far as we know, but of course we'll tell everyone if there's something super exciting, wild, or crazy that goes on (or maybe all three!).

Keep praying for our and the kids' health, as sicknesses pass along pretty easily when meals are shared between 25 or so unwashed hands.

We love and miss you guys (and definitely appreciate all the comments). We'll post again very soon.

Peace and blessings,
Megan and Chelsea

  1. Chelsea, you're doing a great job, and so is your friend that I don't know. But Chelsea, you already have practice carrying buckets of water on your head, as evidenced by that one picture of you with a bucket on your head on Facebook, and you would have had more practice if you would have let me balance books on your head in high school. You also have a big brain, meaning your head is more than strong enough to carry the buckets.

I will mail you some hand sanitizer so you won't get sick.

If you could somehow manage to grow a pouch, you should carry the kids in there, like a kangaroo, because that probably would be pretty funny.

You missed election day here in Alabama. Ron Sparks beat Artur Davis in the democratic primary for governor, and the GOP will have a runoff between Bradley Byrne and either Tim James or Bob Bentley (not sure if he's related to Vann), or at least that's my understanding of the situation. As for state treasurer, which you care about the most because it deals with money, I believe the democrats will be represented by Charley Grimsley, and the republicans will be represented by Young Boozer.

Don't let the bugs, bed bugs or otherwise (including but not limited to Bugs Bunny and Bugsy Siegel) bite. (And also I hope you aren't mad at me for continuing to comment).

  2. Chelsea, I'm sorry I didn't post these in my previous comments; I was going to, but I forgot. Some more things you need to know:

    - A Detroit Tigers pitcher was one out away from a perfect game, and it appeared he would have it in the bag with a grounder to 2nd base. However, the umpire called the runner safe. The replays clearly showed the runner was out, but the ump made a mistake. He has since admitted his mistake and apologized, and the pitcher has forgiven him. It would have been the 3rd perfect game this season (mind-blowing). Still, a lot of people are upset. However, in my mind, he still pitched a perfect game no matter what the record books say.
    - Ken Griffey Jr. retired from baseball yesterday.
    - The NBA finals start tonight.
    - The trivia finals are this Sunday night; I wish you could be there.
    - The oil spill is still causing a lot of problems; we could use your problem solving skills.

    Sorry for commenting again.

  4. love the pic of you girls with little papooses. i guess that's for native americans though. next time i dig a well, i'll know who to call to bring me some water :)....i'm glad brennan is keeping you up to date on the local elections...and yes, the treasurer could be young boozer...not A young boozer. that would just be nuts. in more news, gambling halls are supposed to shut down tomorrow by 6 pm ..for the 50th time due to a supreme court ruling...we'll see how long that lasts. and brennan forgot to mention that "big luther" strange beat out troy king for atty general (i think that's the title)..i'm not surprised since troy can't seem to get along with anyone.....i didn't make it to the polls this week but i will definitely vote in november....as for the sickness in the camp, i'm believing that eveything you consume is sanctified and clean, and no sickness will come to you or megan, termites and all, if you catch anymore. it sounds like the kids are really taking to both of you. i think it's cool that you moved in with them. they're really going to miss you guys when you leave. i know you'll miss them too.....i'll talk to you soon baby girl......love mom

  8. Hey, Chelsea (and Megan, whom I don't know, but am praying for:)

I am so proud of you girls. Those kids look so happy when they're with you. I was just imagining how shocked the people there would be if they could see my or Tim's redheaded whitey white skin:) (Is there a superlative for Obrani?)

I just read Lauren's blog, and am jealous. As a Spanish teacher, I've always wanted to go there. Maybe next year......hopefully.

So, Daniel looked in the back yard and Sophie (the brown dog) had killed a mockingbird!!! Guess she didn't read the line in the book that says "It's a sin to kill a mockingbird". :) It was so gross. Thankfully, Dr. Daniel took care of it for me.

Tim is taking two classes = humanities and business, Daniel is taking something called PDA (and I'm glad it's not the ORU kind of PDA, lol) and I'm taking Latin. We're a bunch of bookworms here.

Tulsa is hot and humid. Mr. Rink has a garden, and so far, we have so many jalapeƱos that we could light a fire by rubbing them together. Hopefully the okra, bell peppers and tomatoes are coming soon.

You girls are in my prayers - for safety, health and happiness. Love you! Mrs. Rink

  9. It is so much fun to read about your adventures in Ghana!! I definitely know what it's like to adjust to a new culture, and you seem to do just fine! Make lots of memories, for yourselves, and those you meet!

I'm trying to adjust to my own culture again.. easier said then done.. I still think in english... and it's still easier for me to read in english rather than swedish.. =) But it's all good! I'm in the process of applying to med.school and finish scholarships to finance it.. I need a miracle, but our God is a God of miracles!

I pray that what you do will have a lasting impact on the children you touch; both spiritually and academically! I also pray for health for you and the children!

    Love you both!! <3 M
